Carry On Doctorate - Barbara Windsor will be honoured by the University of East London later today.

The actress, who was born in Shoreditch in east London and played landlady Peggy Mitchell in EastEnders for more than 10 years, will be awarded an honorary doctorate.

She was nominated by the university's School of Arts and Digital Industries for her career which has seen her star on stage and screen for seven decades.

Speaking ahead of the ceremony, she said: "This is a great honour for me because I have such a deep connection with the East End.

"Not only was it the place I was born but it has played a huge part in my career and continues to inspire me.

"I am genuinely so moved to receive this, and I know if my mother was alive today she would be so proud of me and say 'that's my girl'."

The university is split between several campuses in the capital and the ceremony takes place at The O2 Arena in Greenwich

Windsor, who starred in a string of saucy Carry On comedies, was given the Freedom of the City of London several years ago.
