THE struggle to protect the planet from the effects of pollution has prompted ingenious solutions ranging from ocean wave power to ground source heating.

Now shoppers can take lessons in how to save money and the environment by making their own carrier bags from their old T-shirts.

It is hoped it will go a small way towards helping the Scottish Government reach its target of recycling 70 per cent of all Scotland's waste.

Artists, artisans and craftspeople who hold workshops in crafts including felt-making are putting on free demonstrations for adults and children on how to get a new lease of life out of an old garment to help carry shopping home.

Mugdock Makkers Arts and Crafts Gallery at Mugdock Country Park at Milngavie is holdings its next session next month.

Artist Lucy Jackson said it came up with the idea as part of a series of recycling workshops.

She said: "We had been looking to do something interesting and we had done a number of recycling projects.

"All people need to do is bring a T-shirt and I will give them a pair of scissors and show them how to do it.

"We've already had one workshop and we are holding another one next month."
