A SCOT has been charged with biting off part of the ear of an actor from television's Casualty programme.

A 32-year-old man from Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, has been charged with wounding with intent after Clive Mantle, 55, who has also appeared in Game of Thrones, had surgery to save his ear after the early-morning attack on Sunday.

Mr Mantle was staying at a Travelodge in Forster Street on Newcastle's Quayside after appearing in a production of The Ladykillers at the city's Theatre Royal.

It was believed Mr Mantle was attacked at 4.30am after he asked other guests to keep the noise down.

A spokesman for the actor's agent, London-based Saraband Associates, said the police and ambulance crews were called after the attack and the part of his ear which was severed was re-attached.

Mr Mantle will see a specialist in Oxford today.

Mr Mantle, who is more than 6ft 5in, played Greatjon Umber, a Northern lord, in the first series of Game of Thrones. In Casualty, he was Mike Barrett.

The alleged attacker will appear before Newcastle Magistrates next month.
