THOUSANDS of homes to rent are to be built on 90 council-owned sites across Scotland's biggest city.

The city council has teamed up with Glasgow Housing Association and others to identify land where 3500 homes can be constructed.

Under the scheme, the council will rent the land – on cleared brownfield sites – to housing associations and private developers on long-term leases.

It is hoped the move will boost house building in the city.

More than £180 million will be channelled from Government funds for housebuilding projects, allowing 1500 homes to be built. The rest of the housing will be funded through further measures, including cash from private investors, which have yet to be revealed.

Gordon Matheson, leader of Glasgow City Council, said: "Housing in Glasgow has changed beyond recognition in my lifetime but our city needs more homes to rent and buy. The Labour council will do both."
