A FORMER top international athlete currently in charge of the local authority in Cornwall has been named as the new chief executive of Edinburgh City Council.

Andrew Kerr was announced as the successor to Dame Sue Bruce, who is due to retire in October after nearly five years in the job.

The 56-year-old was born in Falkirk and first worked for the district council there.

He has represented Great Britain in international athletics and has had a 32-year public sector career including three years at Birmingham City Council, four and a half years as chief executive of North Tyneside Council and spells in charge of Wiltshire Council and Cardiff City Council.

He has been CEO of Cornwall Council since December 2013.

Edinburgh city council leader Andrew Burns said: "I'm delighted that Andrew Kerr has emerged as our preferred candidate. We ran a rigorous competitive recruitment process with a strong field of candidates.

"It was essential we chose the right calibre of person for this important and challenging leadership role.

"Andrew brings a wealth of local government experience and enthusiasm at a time when we face many unprecedented challenges and opportunities.
