FRIENDS of a man who was killed during a disturbance in a residential cul de sac have paid tribute to the "gentle giant".

Brian Cogan died following an incident in Margaret Gardens, Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, at around 7.20pm on Friday evening.

Detectives are treating the death of the 43-year-old, from Wishaw in North Lanarkshire, as murder.

A friend of Mr Cogan, who did not want to be named, said his friends and family are all in shock at his death.

He said: "Nobody knows what has happened, not even his family know.

"Brian was a big gentle giant, he wouldn't go about looking for fights or anything like that.

"We're all scratching our heads wondering how this could have happened."

Another friend also paid tribute on a facebook page belonging to Mr Cogan, who is believed to be a father to two young boys.

David McPherson wrote: "RIP Mate, another great guy taken away too soon. GBNF."

Officers investigating the death have been collecting and reviewing CCTV images from in and around the area on the night of the incident.

Detective Chief Inspector Gary Boyd, from Police Scotland's major investigation team, appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

He said: ''It's unclear how this man sustained what turned out to be a fatal injury.

"We know there were a number of men who had gathered and we know a disturbance took place, which led to a man's death.

"I am sure there are people who have information regarding this incident who have not yet spoken to police and I would urge them to contact us.

"A young man has lost his life and it's imperative we know how and why this happened and trace whoever is responsible."

Meanwhile, detectives are continuing to investigate the death of another man who was found dying in a Glasgow street last week.

Officers believe Albert McDonald, 58, may have been attacked and robbed. He was discovered on the pavement of Cumbernauld Street with head injuries at 9.30pm on Monday, June 15.

It is understood that his wallet and mobile phone were missing.

Detective Chief Inspector Laura McLuckie said: "Cumbernauld Road would have been busy, with people coming out of the Bingo and drivers passing through the area, around the time Albert was found. I would appeal to anyone who saw anything suspicious to contact police immediately."
