FORMER Formula One racing driver Johnny Dumfries has topped the list of Scotland's wealthiest sports stars with a fortune estimated at £110 million.

Dumfries, 54, who owns the 53,000-acre Mount Stuart estate on the Isle of Bute, was ranked fifth in the league table of Britain's 100 richest sporting figures.

The son of the 6th Marquess of Bute, he learned to drive on the family estate and would go on to partner the late Ayrton Senna in the 1986 Formula One championship.

David Beckham was ranked in first place by the Sunday Times Sport Rich List with an estimated personal wealth of £160m, while his former boss at Manchester United, Govan-born Sir Alex Ferguson, has for the first time been named the richest football manager in Britain with £32m – ranking him in 28th place overall.

Scots racing drivers David Coulthard and Dario Franchitti both make the top 20. Retired Formula One driver, Coulthard, is ranked in 11th place with a £50m fortune, while Indycar champion Franchitti comes in at 15th place with £46m.

Scots tennis ace, Andy Murray, has amassed an estimated £42m from winnings and sponsorship to put him in 42nd place – though his fortune would certainly balloon if he were to secure a long-awaited Grand Slam crown in 2012.

Scotland national team footballer, Darren Fletcher – currently on indefinite sick leave with ulcerative colitis from his club side, Manchester United – is the only Scottish footballer to make the list. His wealth is estimated at £6m.
