THERE were cheers as all 18 members of the European Ryder Cup team celebrated with their winners' trophy at Gleneagles.

First Minister Alex Salmond praised European team captain Paul McGinley's "magnificent stewardship" as he presented the silverware to the triumphant side, who defeated the US team by 16½-11½ in a thrilling final day's play in Perthshire.

Irishman Mr McGinley was supported by his five vice-captains - Des Smyth, Sam Torrance, Jose Maria Olazabal, Padraig Harrington and Miguel Angel Jimenez - and team members Thomas Bjorn, Victor Dubuisson, Stephen Gallacher, Sergio Garcia, Martin Kraymer, Graeme McDowell, Rory McIlroy, Ian Poulter, Justin Rose, Henrik Stenson, Lee Westwood and Welsh rookie Jamie Donaldson, whose victorious play-off against American Keegan Bradley swept the Europeans to an unbeatable 14½ points yesterday afternoon.

McGinley said: "I'm very proud of every one of these players. I couldn't have asked for an ounce more from them."

There were also congratulations from tennis ace Andy Murray, fresh from his own victory at the Shenzhen Open, who tweeted: "Great job Europe ... Sounds like a very clinical performance at Gleneagles!"
