A highly anticipated new version of Shakespeare's 'Scottish play', Macbeth, starring Michael Fassbender, is to premiere at this year's Cannes film festival.

The film, shot on the Isle of Skye, was partially funded by Creative Scotland, the national arts and screen agency.

The movie, directed by Justin Kurzel, also stars Marion Cotillard, David Thewlis, Jack Reynor and Sean Harris as well as Fassbender - star of Shame, 12 Years a Slave, the recent X Men films and Prometheus, in the titular role.

Scottish actors in the movie include David Hayman, Ross Anderson and Lynne Kennedy.

Unlike more recent versions of the classic play, it is set in 11th Century Scotland.

Creative Scotland funding came to £200,000 and it also received location support and advice.

Natalie Usher, director of film and media at Creative Scotland, said: "We are delighted that Justin Kurzel's Macbeth has been selected to screen in competition at this year's Cannes International Film Festival [the 68th].

"We congratulate Justin, the producers and all involved in the film.

"We are really proud to have supported this compelling realisation of one of Shakespeare's finest works.

"We wish the film every success."

The film has already generated some "Oscar buzz" for Fassbender in the title role.
