Twelve people had to be evacuated after a major fire broke out in a newly opened holiday lodge in the grounds of a luxury hotel.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said that the fire erupted at 6.05pm in a building at the Lochside House Hotel in New Cumnock, Ayrshire.

Two people were given precautionary health checks checks by ambulance service staff.

The SFRS said that the fire, in one of the newly-completed lodges, was "well alight" when they arrived.

A spokeswoman said: "At approximately 6.05pm the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service received a call reporting a fire in one of the Lodges within the grounds of the Lochside House Hotel in New Cumnock.

"Two local fire appliances from New Cumnock and Cumnock Community Fire Station were immediately dispatched and on their arrival they were faced with a well developed fire."

Staff at the Lochside House Hotel said the fire had been brought under control by late evening.
