Firefighters are still tackling a wildfire in the Highlands which has been burning since yesterday.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) was called to the scene behind the water treatment works in Dornoch at about 12.30pm yesterday.

Firefighters have been dealing with a three-mile fire-front from first light this morning.

Six appliances were still at the scene at lunchtime today.

At the height of the incident last night, eight pumps, the welfare unit, water carrier, incident command unit and all-terrain vehicle were there.

Group manager John MacDonald, who was incident commander last night, said: "We are dealing with a very protracted wildfire incident which covers a wide area and where access is difficult in places.

"I would like to pay tribute to the commitment and effort of fire crews who have been dealing with this incident.

"I'd also like to thank local residents for their assistance and support during this incident."

The SFRS said that the dry conditions and strong winds have made firefighting challenging.
