A fisherman who was airlifted to hospital after he fell overboard from a boat has died.

The man fell into the sea from fishing vessel Beryl when it was around 20 miles west of Shetland at 9.25am this morning, Shetland Coastguard said.

He was pulled from the water by a rescue craft from the Caledonian Victory, an offshore standby support ship which was nearby.

The man was then transferred to the Stornoway Coastguard helicopter, which was training in the area, and flown to Sumburgh in Shetland.

From there he was flown to Gilbert Bain Hospital in Lerwick by the Shetland Coastguard helicopter.

Police confirmed he had died but no further details were being released.
