BRITISH tourists in a Red Sea resort have been warned to stay within the grounds of their hotels after new violence in Egypt on a "Day of Rage".

The Foreign Office issued the advice for Hurghada, where violent clashes broke out earlier this week away from the main resorts, leaving one man dead.

At least 60 people were killed yesterday as supporters of overthrown president Mohamed Mursi clashed with security forces, with up to 45 people reportedly shot dead in fighting in the capital Cairo. Two days ago, 638 died as the protesters' camps were cleared.

The Foreign Office said: "Hurghada police advised tourists to remain in hotel grounds. We advise you to follow their advice. You are strongly advised to avoid all large gatherings. If you become aware of any nearby protests, leave the area immediately. Do not attempt to cross road blocks."

Germany and Sweden are advising nationals against all but essential travel to Egypt.
