A Scots fundraiser who took on the challenge of doing a "wee walk" for charity has finished her feat after completing 1703 miles in 104 days.

Carol Smithaird, 33, averaged 23 miles a day to march from Land's End to John O'Groat's, climbing the three peaks of Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis en route.

Miss Smithaird, of Dunfermline, Fife, who is hoping to raise £20,000 for the RNLI, marked the end of her challenge with a trek on Orkney, where she met up with the crew of Longhope Lifeboat to celebrate her achievement yesterday.

The freelance environmental consultant started in Shetland on August 10 and finished 11 days earlier than planned.

Her experiences ranged from flooding in her home town to rain for four days in Rannoch Moor.

She described the conditions on top of Ben Nevis as breathtaking. "I was really worried about Ben Nevis because when I was on Rannoch Moor it started snowing, but the day I climbed Ben Nevis there was not a breath of wind at the top, it was like a proper winter wonderland.

"I didn't have a favourite bit of the walk, everything was so different. I have seen the country in a completely different way than I thought I would."
