THE record-breaking Commonwealth Games Rugby Sevens tournament has been named as the sport's top event of the year.

The two-day Ibrox Stadium sell-out event saw South Africa end New Zealand's unbeaten 30 match Commonwealth Games winning streak in front of 171,000 people - a new global record for the sport.

The award was given at Rugby Expo 2014, the sport's premier gathering which is supported by leading bodies including Premiership Rugby and Scottish, England and Welsh rugby unions. The tournament beat off competition from the Women's Rugby World Cup in France and the Super League Magic Weekend in Manchester.

Around 192 athletes contested 45 matches. The defeated Kiwis had previously won every event since the sport was introduced to the Games in 1998.

David Grevemberg, Glasgow 2014 chief executive, said:"Rugby Sevens as a sport was born in Scotland, so it's really wonderful to see Glasgow and Scotland's Commonwealth Games showcase for the sport recognised as the top rugby event this year."
