WELSH Secretary David Jones remains under pressure over comments about gay marriage today as Labour dismissed his denial of being homophobic and demanded a public apology.

Jones yesterday insisted he did not oppose same-sex couples raising children after appearing to suggest they could not provide a "warm and safe environment" in a TV interview about his vote against gay marriage.

Shadow Welsh secretary Owen Smith has written to David Cameron to demand his cabinet colleague withdraw the remark and apologise.

A spokesman for Cameron said last night: "Gay marriage and gay adoption are both conscience issues ... the Prime Minister is a supporter of both."
