A GIRL with epilepsy who was forced to sleep in a dog cage will receive a special bed, after a change of mind by council managers.

Sadie Fenton Hunt, 10, from Chesser, Edinburgh, cannot be allowed out of bed at night in case she hurts herself.

The youngster suffers from West Syndrome and has little understanding of the world because she is unable to speak or communicate.

Her mother Effie, 41, had to resort to using a dog cage to keep her safe, after Edinburgh City Council said it would not supply the special padded cot she needs.

When the family lived in Northumberland, Sadie was given a customised bed by the local authority there.

Her family moved to Edinburgh to be closer to Sadie's grandmother in January, when the local council said they would provide a special chair and bath for her, but not a bed. But council chiefs apologised to the family yesterday, adding that they would provide her with a new bed that would suit her needs.

A spokesman for the City of Edinburgh Council said: "We have reviewed Sadie's case and are taking action."
