For most people the marathon would be challenge enough.

But a businesswoman from Glasgow is vying to become the first Scottish woman to complete a marathon and a 100k run in just three days, in temperatures plummeting to -20.

Audrey McIntosh, 50, will attempt the Antarctic Ice Marathon, which takes place at an altitude of 700-metres, in November to raise money for Alzheimer Scotland.

Only one other British woman has successfully completed both distances together.

Audrey, who has been running for 15 years and has completed 13 marathons, will run deep into Antarctica at the base of the Union Glacier and Ellsworth Mountains, some 600 miles from the South Pole - too far south even for penguins.

Despite being an experienced runner, she admits the challenge will be formidable - particularly as she doesn't like the cold, or camping. Both will play a big role in the epic ordeal.

"Turning fifty this year has been a catalyst for my challenge," said Audrey, who lives in the south side.

"I want to celebrate my good health and happy life by doing an epic challenge that will help to provide care and support for those in the community who are less fortunate.

"I have achieved a lot in my life, but still have more to give. I now want to take the challenge and the fundraising to a new level and do something different and amazing - perhaps inspiring others to do likewise.

"I also felt it an appropriate choice as there is a certain synergy in that dementia can be looked at as a person freezing-out, or likened to someone disappearing into a frozen wasteland."

A self-employed business consultant who sits on the boards of two theatre companies, Audrey has already raised around £10,000 for good causes through her running, including the Victoria Infirmary where her husband Alasdair was treated for Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma.
