GLASGOW'S newest entertainment venue has won a major architectural prize.
The SSE Hydro, designed by architects Foster + Partners, received an award at the annual The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) dinner in Glasgow.
Also listed among the prize winners was RMJM Architecture for the £125 million Commonwealth Games Athletes' Village and the Buchanan Gardens project by BPD.
The awards ceremony in Glasgow recognised 13 designs across Scotland ranging from multi-million pound constructions to individual houses.
Iain Connelly, president of the RIAS, said: "Eighty-three submissions from throughout Scotland, ranging in cost from £26,000 to £125 million, is a tremendous vote of confidence.
"It absolutely confirms that this award, in only its third year, is now the single most important recognition of architectural achievement in Scotland."
The winners included the £12 million Advocates Close in Edinburgh by Morgan McDonnell Architecture, The Birks Cinema in Aberfeldy by Robin Baker Architects and the Cliff House on the Isle of Skye by Dualchas Architects.
Others recognised at the ceremony were the Grassmarket Community Project by Gareth Hoskins, House No. 7 on the Isle of Tiree by Denizen Works Ltd, The Inn at John O'Groats by GLM, Knockando Woolmill by LDN Architects and The Bridge at Stepps by Reiach & Hall Architects for Scottish Water.
Elder & Cannon Architects were double winners with their two new blocks at 261 West Princes Street, Glasgow, and the Clydebank East Workshops project.
Margaret Richards was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Firefighters who battled the blaze at the Glasgow School of Art were also praised for their skill and bravery during a special presentation in recognition of their work, which saved 90 per cent of the building and priceless Mackintosh artefacts.
RIAS president Iain Connelly said: "The value of Glasgow School of Art goes well beyond the city or even Scotland. It is a work of architectural heritage of world renown and its influence on 20th century architecture is immeasurable.
"It reflects the genius of one of our greatest ever architects.
"The whole of the architectural profession in Scotland will, I am sure, join with me in congratulating the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service for the extraordinary work they did on that terrible day as the rest of the world could only look on. We are forever in their debt."
