A Scot who became the oldest person in the country has died aged 110.

Maria Lazzeri, who was born in 1904, died a month before what would have been her 111th birthday.

Mrs Lazzeri, of Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, moved to Glasgow's east end in 1924 from the village of Rico di Tresana, near Pisa, Italy, with her husband Americo and started a chip shop.

She gave up the business in 1989 after Americo passed away from a heart attack.

But at the age of 85 the great grandmother found work in her local delicatessan where she did three shifts a week until she was 100, making meatballs and cannelloni.

Mrs Lazzeri had three sons and four great grandchildren and lived through five monarchs and outlived 22 prime ministers.

A family spokesperson said: "Maria was an amazing person, mum, grandmother and great grandmother.

"She had such a lasting influence on all of us and we will never forget her."

Maria had advised people to live long by keeping active, working hard and taking every day as it comes.

Maria became Scotland's oldest person after the death of Janet Roberts in 2012 who lived to 110.
