A HEALTH club chain has been fined £20,000 after several people were treated in hospital due to a chlorine gas leak.

Virgin Active staff accidentally mixed polyaluminium chloride with the swimming pool disinfectant sodium hypochlorite at its Omni Centre in Leith Street, Edinburgh, in February 2010.

Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard the mixture produced toxic chlorine gas, risking serious harm to those using the facilities.

An investigation showed there had been serious failures in the way the hazardous substances were managed and controlled. Virgin Active Limited entered a guilty plea.

City of Edinburgh Council environment convener Lesley Hinds said: "These failings are totally unacceptable."
