A PARENTING helpline will open over Hogmanay for the first time in its 12-year history to offer support to families affected by domestic violence.

ParentLine Scotland will operate throughout New Year to meet with demand from callers facing abuse over the festive period.

Charity CHILDREN 1ST, who operate the helpline, decided to extend the opening hours after calls on domestic abuse doubled throughout December with the launch of a joint campaign with the Violence Reduction Unit.

Alison Todd, director of policy and practice development at CHILDREN 1ST, said: "Hogmanay should be a time of celebration and looking to the future with optimism, but when there is violence in the home, it is often a time that children fear. People often forget that domestic abuse has such a negative impact on children."
