Proposals to turn part of the Moray base into a film studio are being discussed by the local MSP Richard Lochhead, who is also Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and Environment, and the barrack's commander.

The RAF left the base, where it had been since 1939, last year and was replaced by the army in the form of the 39th Engineer Regiment. But they do not need all the space and Mr Lochhead agreed to explore the idea of creating a film studio on site after a constituent suggested it to him. Such a scheme would create local jobs.

Mr Lochhead said: "Our meeting with Lt Col Andy Sturrock to discuss a filming facility at Kinloss Barracks was helpful.

"As Kinloss is a fully operational barracks there are a number of things to consider such as access, security and the imperative for the MoD to be able to train and operate freely across the whole of its estate, but that said there may be ways in which elements of the real estate at the barracks could be used for film-related work without impinging on the Army's and RAF's activities.

"The next step will be to work with Creative Scotland to flesh out some more detailed proposals that the Defence Infrastructure Organisation, as the landowners, and the Army, as the principal users of Kinloss Barracks, can evaluate.

"I will be keeping the Moray Council informed of developments and hope to have their support as we continue to explore all the possibilities."
