PATIENTS attending hospital appointments will begin "checking in" themselves as part of a new pilot project that bypasses the need to deal with receptionists.

The machines, similar to those used in airport departure lounges, are being introduced into the Western General Hospital and the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh by NHS Lothian but could be rolled out to other buildings if they prove successful.

Patients will be asked to swipe their finger over a touch screen and input their details into the devices, which cost around £3000.

Martin Egan, Director of e-Health at NHS Lothian, said the kiosks will be completely secure and will not store sensitive patient information.

He added: "These kiosks will help NHS Lothian provide a more streamlined, efficient service for patients. It means that patients can arrive for their appointments and check themselves in."
