POLICE were last night hunting a gunman suspected of shooting dead an off-duty police officer and leaving another man injured in a seaside town.

Essex Police want to question Peter Reeve, 64, over the death of PC Ian Dibell in Clacton yesterday.

It is believed Mr Dibell, who was in his 40s and lived in the town, intervened when he saw a gunman firing wildly in the street.

A police spokesman said Reeve was dangerous and warned people not to approach him.

He added that teams of armed officers were spread out across the town and a police helicopter had been deployed.

Dog units have also been placed on stand-by.

Paul McKeever, chairman of the Police Federation of England and Wales, said: "This is extremely tragic and devastating news. Constable Ian Dibell demonstrated remarkable courage and bravery whilst off-duty and has paid the ultimate price.

"The thoughts of the entire police service are with his family, friends and colleagues at this very difficult time. It's a very sad day indeed."
