Irn Bru returns to its roots with Commonwealth Games can design

Irn Bru is returning to its original can design to mark its sponsorship of the Commonwealth Games.

Often referred to as "Scotland's other national drink" after whisky, Irn Bru was first sold in 1901 when Highland strongman Adam Brown featured on the label.

Commonwealth weightlifter Peter Kirkbride has now helped recreated the original design by donning a moustache and lifting a can into the air.

AG Barr, which makes the soft drink, said the new design celebrates over a century of the company's sporting heritage including its early sponsorship of Alex Munro, a world champion caber tosser and wrestler.

Head of marketing Adrian Troy said: "Irn Bru has a proud sporting heritage dating right back to 1901. We're bringing that to life through our new limited edition design and with the help of Peter Kirkbride, a modern-day strongman.

"We're extremely excited to be part of what's set to be an extraordinary event for Glasgow and the rest of the nation."

Glasgow 2014 chief executive David Grevemberg said: "I am delighted to see the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games so strongly supported with this eye-catching special edition design from AG Barr. The company has a strong track record of backing sport at all levels from grassroots to elite and these designs can only help build the anticipation and excitement for Glasgow 2014, the biggest multisport Games Scotland has ever seen."
