The Crown Office office confirmed the papers had been given to Coulson, the Prime Minister's former communications chief and former editor of the News of the World.

The alleged offence is in relation to testimony he gave at the trial of Scottish politician Tommy Sheridan.

He will appear at a preliminary hearing at Glasgow's High Court on 6 August.
