A CONTROVERSIAL Labour councillor exposed as fraudulently using a disability blue badge has been suspended from the party's administration in Glasgow and axed from another political role.

But Sohan Singh's ban does not relate to other recent brushes with the authorities, including revelations by The Herald that he operated illegally as a landlord and had been warned over breaches of liquor laws and staff at his hotel hampering police.

The sanctions have also been described as too weak by opposition leaders, who claim he should have been expelled from the party.

Mr Singh met with party enforcers yesterday after he used the disabled bay while on official business.

The businessman was suspended from the Labour Group for eight weeks and removed from the board of Strathclyde Fire and Rescue with immediate effect.

A Labour Group spokesman said: "In line with the group's standing orders, Councillor Singh was found to have committed a serious breach of rule by failing to uphold the highest standards of integrity and probity expected."

Mr Singh said: "I fully accept that my behaviour has fallen short of the standards expected of elected officials. This is a source of deep regret. I accept responsibility and apologise unreservedly."

SNP group leader Graeme Hendry said: "The idea that a councillor can swan around the city doing as they please is disgusting."
