THE owners of a piece of land in a Scottish cathedral town at the centre of a dispute over trees being cut down have hit back saying they were right to carry out the work.

Police were called to the standoff between locals and developers after trees were felled at Holmehill, Dunblane, amid claims the local authority should have been notified about the work.

Wardlaw Gardens, the owner of the land, said they were now working with Stirling Council, but said they had stayed within the law as there was no tree preservation order in place.

The company has hit out at those opposed to the felling, saying the land has become overgrown and strewn with rubbish and clear up work is essential.

It said: "The company has a right to manage the land which has been neglected for so many years that it is now a wilderness of tangled undergrowth, self-seeded trees and garden and household rubbish. The tree felling which took place was the start of a programme of woodland management. There is no tree preservation order in place."
