SCOTLAND'S largest local authority is facing a bill of nearly £2 million in compensation for land acquired from a housing association as part of the Commonwealth Games.

Glasgow City Council secured several plots in the east end belonging to Thenue Housing Association through Compulsory Purchase Orders (CPO) to make way for the Athletes Village.

The council had previously been in negotiations with the Bridgeton and Dalmarnock-based social housing provider in 2009, in an effort to acquire property and land on a voluntary basis before going down the CPO route.

In all, the city council secured over 90 properties and 1.67 acres from Thenue via CPOs. Once it did it became legally bound to pay the association compensation for what it acquired.
