A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following an attack on a teenager at a holiday park.

Conner Marshall was found unconscious at Trecco Bay, Porthcawl, on Sunday morning.

The 18-year-old from Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, was taken to hospital and placed in intensive care. However, despite the best efforts of doctors, he was pronounced dead yesterday.

South Wales police said a man had been arrested in Scotland in connection with his death - with detectives continuing to appeal for information.

Officers said Conner had been staying at the caravan park with friends and the group had spent the evening in a number of bars in the seaside town.

However, it is believed Conner decided to go for a walk to the beach while the rest of his party returned to their caravan. He was found at 7am the following morning, with "multiple injuries".

Detective Superintendent Paul Hurley said: "We have a distinct time line of midnight to 7am on Sunday morning and I am appealing for anyone who may have seen anything during these hours to come forward.

"Conner was wearing a purple shirt, black skinny jeans, grey Adidas trainers, a blue/grey jacket and was carrying a grey Nike shoulder bag.

"Our officers are continuing to conduct inquiries to establish the full circumstances of what happened however we have identified a suspect and arrested a local South Wales man in Scotland.

"I would like to stress that this suspect was not part of the group of friends staying in the caravan with Conner that evening.

"However, this was a brutal attack and I believe the suspect may have shared information with friends, relatives or neighbours."

Mr Hurley added he wanted to reassure residents and visitors to Porthcawl and Trecco Bay the incident was "an isolated one...on a well-managed site".

He said: "Parkdean Trecco Bay Management are continuing to work closely with South Wales Police. Our thoughts are with Conner's family and all those affected by this tragic incident. Earlier in the week forensic specialists and police officers were seen combing the Sycamore Drive and Cedars area of Trecco Bay - one of the UK's biggest caravan parks.

Parkdean said it was doing all it could to help the police. A spokeswoman added: "We are urging anyone with any information to please come forward.

"Our thoughts continue to be with the family (of the 18-year-old male) at this time."

Ysgol Bro Morgannwg in Barry, where Conner was a former pupil, said it had received news about his death "with sadness".

"We extend our sincere sympathies to his family and friends," a statement read.
