MORE than 200 horses galloped around Edinburgh's boundary and ascended the Royal Mile in a whirl of pomp and circumstance that has become a traditional Scottish fixture.

Grand National-winning jockey Ryan Mania was among those lining up for the annual Riding of the Marches - an event dating back to the 16th century.

An estimated 250 horses took part in the re-enactment that saw able-bodied men ride the city boundaries on horseback, delivering news that Edinburgh's common land was intact.

Riders from as far afield as Shetland and Surrey took part in the cavalcade, revived in 2009 after a 63-year break.
