LIFTING the Queen's Baton brought back special memories for one former athlete when the symbol of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games arrived in Pakistan.

Abdul Ghafoor was the first athlete from his country to win a medal for weightlifting when he came second at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh in 1970.

Mr Ghafoor was among the delegation of athletes and officials who greeted the baton when it was brought to the Badshahi Mosque last week.

He is seen here with Scots adventurer Mark Beaumont, who is following the baton's journey round the Commonwealth for the BBC.

And although his days of competing are behind him, the weightlifter will be keeping a keen eye on events in Glasgow when his countrymen compete.

Both his sons, Abdullah and younger brother Mohammad have represented Pakistan internationally in weightlifting and will be hoping to make the team when it competes in Glasgow.

His silver medal was one of total haul of nine podium finishes for the Pakistani team in 1970, with his colleagues also picking up four golds, two other silvers and four bronze medals.
