FANS and ex-players have gathered at Ibrox to see a memorial to Rangers legend Sandy Jardine unveiled.

The bronze bust, created by renowned Scottish artist Helen Runciman, will go on permanent display inside Ibrox Stadium.

Former Rangers, Hearts and Scotland player Jardine lost his battle with cancer last year. He was 65.

His Light Blues career saw him win three League Championships, five Scottish Cups, five League Cups and the European Cup-Winners' Cup in 1972.

The Edinburgh-born player launched his career in the blue half of Glasgow in 1965 and went on to make over 600 appearances for the club.

Towards the end of his career, he switched to the Tynecastle club, which he jointly managed with ex-Ibrox club-mate Alex MacDonald for two years.

Their tenure included the infamous final day loss of the 1986-1986 Premier League title, when Hearts were pipped at the post by Celtic.

Jardine's ex-teammates, including MacDonald, Willie Johnston, Colin Stein and Alex Miller, joined Rangers director John Gilligan to unveil the special tribute yesterday.

Interim chairman Paul Murray said: "It was a tremendous honour and privilege to know Sandy and he epitomised everything that is good about Rangers.

"A man of great integrity, he is sorely missed but will never be forgotten.

"The Sandy Jardine Stand is a lasting tribute to his memory and the bronze bust created in his honour will be given pride of place on the marble staircase."

The bust was paid for by the Rangers fans.

Jardine's widow Shona and other relatives, will be guests of honour at Sunday's game against Hearts. Before the match, Mrs Jardine will join former captain John Greig in an official ceremony to unveil the memorial.
