HEALTH Secretary Alex Neil has defended the record of hospitals in his health board area over rising death rates.

The Airdrie MSP was reacting to his Government's announcement on Tuesday that independent inspectors were being sent into NHS Lanarkshire to probe high mortality rates Monklands Hospital and Wishaw General.

Mr Neil said: "Hospital Standardised Mortality is a complex statistic and shows a reduction in all three Lanarkshire hospitals since the programme was introduced in 2008.

"However recent figures suggest a slowing of the improvement."

Mr Neil said Lanarkshire's hospitals were safe and getting safer.
