A teenager was in a critical condition in hospital after a "freak accident" at a motocross event.

Sean Greig, 17, of Aberdeen, was airlifted to hospital after he fell off his bike during a race at Rhynie, near Huntly, on Sunday.

Paramedics arrived to find the teenager unconscious at the Mains of Lesmore track. An air ambulance and RAF Lossiemouth helicopter were scrambled to the scene and he was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary for treatment.

A 40-year-old man was also flown to hospital with broken ribs and a fractured collarbone during a separate incident on the course.

Yesterday, police said the teenager regained consciousness when he arrived at hospital but was still in a serious condition.

Police Scotland sergeant Philip Thorley said: "He had been attempting a jump and landed awkwardly.

"He remained unconscious here but has now regained consciousness. He's had some scans done and he's in a critical condition at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

"There is still some concern for the rider, but he's in a better condition now."

The young rider is a member of the Buchan Off-Road Motorcycle Club and has competed in several events, winning the 125cc schoolboy race last year.

He graduated to the adult support class and was racing a 250cc motorbike when the accident happened. He was thought to have landed on the bike handlebars when the jump went wrong.
