An MSP has joined calls for the BBC not to cut a popular music programme that highlights new Scottish musical talent.

Radio One’s Introducing In Scotland, recorded in Glasgow, is to be axed and a UK-wide talent show will take its place. Joan McAlpine, MSP for the south of Scotland, has called on the BBC to save the show, which is the subject of a petition that has attracted nearly 6000 signatures.

Ms McAlpine said ending the show would be a “devastating blow to hundreds of young unsigned bands”.

She has lodged a motion in the Scottish Parliament calling on the BBC to keep the show. The member of the Education and Culture Committee added: “I’m pleading with the BBC bosses not to silence the sound of young Scotland. Introducing in Scotland has blazed a trail for our cutting-edge bands and solo acts.

“A popular campaign saved Six Music. Let’s hope the BBC bosses listen to the Scottish public as well.”
