The former Solheim Cup golfer Anneke Sorensen is among seven women who have been made honorary members of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews.

Scottish amateur great Belle Robertson, Dame Laura Davies and Anne, the Princess Royal, are also among those who have have accepted invitations to become honorary members of the R&A, months after the club voted to admit women as members.

The R&A membership voted in September last year, by an 85 p ercent majority, to have female members for the first time in its 260-year history.

Lally Segard, one of France's greatest golfers, Louise Suggs, a pioneer on the LPGA Tour, and Renee Powell, the first woman to become a head professional at a golf club in the UK, are also included in the seven-strong list of honorary members.

Davies is widely regarded as the UK's finest female golfer, having won four major titles and 79 wins around the world while Sorenstam is the former world No 1 who claimed 10 majors during a glittering career.

Robertson won seven Scottish Amateur championships, one Ladies' British Championship and was awarded the MBE in 1973.
