A new police unit has been created by Strathclyde Police to improve the investigation of rape and other sexual crimes.

The move follows changes to the law on sexual offences to include sex when a victim is asleep or unconscious and sex without consent through alcohol consumption.

Dedicated officers will review the investigation process, with input from groups like Scottish Women's Aid and Rape Crisis.

Chief Superintendent George Nedley, who is spearheading the unit, said: "We have recognised a need to review the investigations into this type of crime in order to provide a more comprehensive approach and an enhanced service to victims."

Meanwhile, a nationwide police campaign aimed at changing attitudes to sexual assaults is under way.

Posters will appear in pubs and clubs and an online advert has been posted asking young men to consider the role they can play in preventing rape.
