THE cause of death of a man whose body was found on a beach has been recorded as "unascertained" after a post-mortem examination could not establish why he died.

Police said the death of Ian Carruthers, 31, had "all the hallmarks of a tragic accident".

Mr Carruthers was reported missing from the town of Annan in Dumfries and Galloway, on January 17.

His body was discovered on the Solway Firth shoreline at Portling, near Dalbeattie on Friday.

Two people police arrested were due to appear at Dumfries Sheriff Court on Wednesday but they were freed pending further inquiries.
