The foundation set up in memory of a Scottish aid worker killed in Afghanistan is to help pay the cost of medical treatment for domestic abuse victims.

The Linda Norgrove Foundation is giving almost £10,000 to an organisation called Women for Afghan Women, who help women and girls who have suffered serious injuries as a result of domestic violence or because their families refuse to care for them when they are seriously ill.

Almost £280,000 has been distributed to groups in Afghanistan by the foundation set up by John and Lorna Norgrove in memory of their daughter Linda.

The aid worker, who grew up in the Western Isles, was working in Afghanistan in 2010 when she was kidnapped. She was killed by a grenade thrown by a member of the US special forces in a failed rescue attempt. She was 36.

Lorna Norgrove said: "The stories of the women who suffer such terrible abuse at the hands of their husbands and families can be harrowing to read and we're just grateful to have the chance to help them.

"But we are also determined to look to the future for women in Afghanistan and educating women is an important part of that. Nothing will change for women in Afghanistan in the long term if women remain isolated and uneducated."

The foundation is paying scholarships for six women to study law in Kabul.
