HE'S finally found a bike big enough for his talents.

Former world champion cyclist Graeme Obree kicked off the four-week countdown to the Scotland's biggest bike ride, the freshnlo Pedal for Scotland 2012, at Bankies Bike, Clydebank, yesterday.

The Pedal for Scotland Challenge is a 47-mile timed ride between Glasgow and Edinburgh, and registration is still open. A team of journalists from The Herald has already signed up.

Obree, who famously clinched the world record in 1993 on a bike made from old washing machine parts, said: "Pedal for Scotland is a great way to get people of all ages and abilities involved in cycling.

"Cycling has seen a definite increase in popularity, especially on the back of some great British wins, and I'm sure this will be reflected in participation of this year's event."

The event is taking place on September 9, setting off from Glasgow Green and finishing in style at Murrayfield Stadium.

Ian Aitken, chief executive of Cycling Scotland, added: "We have had a huge summer for cycling and we are expecting a great turnout."
