AN old tardis-style police box has undergone a transformation to help people in a different kind of emergency - a DIY one.

One of the iconic boxes in Edinburgh is set to open its doors as a tool library, allowing people to borrow power and hand tools for all their gardening, painting or decorating needs.

The Edinburgh Tool Library (ETL) is a not-for-profit organisation which works in exactly the same way as a regular library, as well as offering people the chance to learn new skills and get tips and advice from "tool librarians".

These librarians will be made up of experienced tradespeople and trainees looking to get into different trades.

Chris Hellawell, Founder of ETL, said: "The tool library will be a great resource for people across Edinburgh, but what really motivates us is helping young people to get into work.

"They have so much to offer and this programme will support some of them to take the next step towards a brighter future for themselves and their community."

The first of its kind in the UK, the tool library will open on March 7 on Leith Walk.
