FIREFIGHTERS worked overnight to bring a blaze at a derelict school under control.

Crews from Dreghorn Community Fire Station were called to the old Fencedyke Primary School in Irvine at 9.20pm on Tuesday.

Flames had swept through the building, and an aerial rescue pump was brought from Kilmarnock to help tackle the blaze. Firefighters remained at the scene yesterday using a thermal imaging camera to ensure the fire had been extinguished.

Station manager Scott Cunningham, the incident commander, said: "About 15 firefighters worked throughout the night to tackle a substantial fire burning throughout the building.

"We were able to surround the flames and tackle them from both ground level and from height, with high-pressure water jets used to bring the fire under control."

ScottishPower and Scottish Gas staff were also called in to isolate supplies.
