A couple who were crushed against a wall by a reversing car are still fighting for their lives in hospital.

The 47-year-old man and his wife, 42, have been described as critical but stable following the accident in a Borders town.

They were walking in High Street, Melrose, Roxburghshire, when a Vauxhall Astra mounted the pavement.

The rear of the vehicle pinned them against the wall of the George and Abbotsford Hotel.

They suffered severe traumatic injuries and were taken to Borders General Hospital, with the man later transferred to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

The 81-year-old male driver was also taken to hospital but has since been discharged.

Lothian and Borders Police have appealed for any witnesses to contact them.
