A man who was knocked down and killed after leaving a taxi on a motorway has been named by police.

Murray D'Angelo, 28, was travelling with two other men when he got out of the vehicle on the M8 and was struck by two cars travelling between the Hermiston and Gogar junctions on the outskirts of Edinburgh at around 6.16am.

Emergency services were called, but Mr D'Angelo died at the scene.

The M8, one of Scotland's busiest roads, was closed in both directions while police investigated.

Chief Inspector Stevie Dolan said: "I'd like to thank the public for their patience while the M8 was closed to allow us to carry out our investigation.

"To help us piece together the circumstances, anyone who witnessed this collision or has information which can assist with our inquiries is urged to contact police on 101."

Meanwhile, police in the Borders are also appealing for witnesses after a crash in which two people died.

It happened at 3.40pm yesterday on the Duns to Greenlaw road, when a silver Toyota Corolla car and a lorry collided.

The 24-year-old driver and 23-year-old passenger of the car died at the scene.

Sergeant Brian Jones said: "We are appealing for any witnesses to this collision, or anyone who was on the A6105 west of Duns at around 3.40pm to contact police on 101.

"I would also like to urge motorists to take extra care during the winter months and drive according to prevailing road and weather conditions."
