Pedestrian knocked down and killed by taxi

A man has died after he was hit by a black taxi cab while crossing the road, police said today.

The 64-year-old man sustained fatal head injuries in the accident in Marchmont Road at the junction with Warrander Park Road in Edinburgh at 3.10am today.

He was taken to Edinburgh's Royal Infirmary where he later died.

Police closed the road for four hours and are appealing for witnesses.

A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said: "Despite the time at which the incident occurred, there may have been other pedestrians or motorists in the area returning home who can perhaps help with our investigation.

"Anyone with information relevant to this inquiry is asked to contact police immediately."
