COUNCIL officials are to meet with police to ensure 'appropriate' security measures are in place at Scotland's only Jewish school.

Staff and parents from Calderwood Lodge Primary School in East Renfrewshire are said to be one of the many UK Jewish institutions on high alert in the wake of the Paris shootings earlier this month.

As a result of the attack, and another anti-terror raid in Belgium, increased security regulations were put in place across the country to deter any copycat incidents on British soil.

And now, in a precautionary measure, council chiefs will co-ordinate with senior Police Scotland officers to ensure the safety of the Newlands school.

A spokesman for East Renfrewshire Council said: "We are working with police and our Jewish community to ensure we meet the heightened concerns in a measured and appropriate manner.

"All members of our community are being urged to be extra vigilant at this time."

Police Scotland Deputy Chief Constable Iain Livingstone added: "We work closely across the entire spectrum of our organisational responsibilities, across the UK and abroad, to assess and counter the threat from terrorism.

"We must not be complacent. Scotland is not immune from the threat posed by international terrorism."

Similar tight security measures are likely to remain in place at synagogues in Glasgow and other areas of the UK.
