Police get noticed with Twitter feed

POLICE in the Western Isles have praised the "remarkable interest" in their decision to tweet every incident their officers were called out to over a weekend.

The online event started at about 9.45am on Friday when officers were cracking down on speeding motorists in Stornoway.

Over the weekend it charted everything from drink-drive arrests to sheep blocking the road.

Among the incidents on Friday night were a minor road traffic collision in Stornoway and a minor road injury on South Uist.

There was also a reported housebreaking in Stornoway which turned out to be a false alarm, a missing person who was traced by police, a noise complaint on Lewis and a round of licence checks on taxi drivers and premises serving alcohol.

The initiative was launched to give the public an insight into a typical day's policing in rural Scotland.

Officers also arrested a man and confiscated his van after he was caught allegedly driving under the influence of drugs on Lewis.

Police were also called to a dispute between neighbours in Stornoway and to a chimney fire on Harris.

They also dealt with a minor road crash on South Lochs in Stornoway in the early hours of Saturday and an apparent break-in at a business premises in the village.

A member of the public alerted police to lost property found on Benbecula.

Tweeting as the initiative came to an end, Western Isles Police said: "To everyone that has followed our page in the last few days, thank you - remarkable interest."
