A primary school badly damaged by a large roof fire is to be demolished.

About 35 firefighters were called to the blaze at St Dominic's Primary School in Airdrie, North Lanarkshire, at about 4pm yesterday.

Staff inside the building were evacuated before crews arrived and no-one was injured.

The fire started after lessons had ended for the day and pupils had left.

The flames were so severe that residents in nearby homes were evacuated by police because of smoke.

North Lanarkshire Council said the building is beyond repair and demolition work is expected to start today.

Pupils are not attending school today and arrangements for the next few months are to be announced later.
